Firstly, Bert tells the Old Man’s story and Reiner looks at him like “bro, wtf”, it wasn’t a uniformed decision by the two. The story haunts Bert because after the Old Man tells it, he commits suicide by hanging and what position do the Cadets find Bert sleeping in, the Hanged Man position, which also symbolizes sacrifice or ultimate surrender.. Bert is the first Titan shifter to have his power inherited by another of the Cadets.
