Pete B: I seem to be a lone voice here - rather like Robin. I would never "thumbs down" a video of this sort, but I simply cannot get over the fact that this album has been released under the Fleet Foxes moniker. I felt deflated, and somehow cheated, the whole time I listened to Shore. Yes, the songs are lovely, Robin sounds good, but this work, which remember started life as a Robin Pecknold solo album, is just that, a Robin Pecknold solo album. Clearly the band has actually broken up, and Robin decided to "be" Fleet Foxes for this record, maybe for one last time, to wriggle out of a contractual obligation. I find that extremely sad - that we have been left with but three albums containing those amazing harmonies. The Shore album was, to me, a real kick in the teeth at the end of an already appalling year, for this reason. Excitement over a new surprise Fleet Foxes album, only to hear that only one of the guys in the band was on it. If anyone would like to comment sensibly on this and tell me something that would convince me to approach this differently, I'm more than willing to listen to you because I'm open to loving it like you guys all seem to do, but I just can't get over this emotional and psychological hurdle. It's a cheat and it just seems completely wrong to me. Please don't just say "well forget the Fleet Foxes thing and just imagine it came out as Robin's record." I've tried that. I would love some context to why else he would have done this from people who know the band's history better than I do, or something concrete from the album itself that will make me take it seriously as a Fleet Foxes project.
