Steve Varley: Make sure to also check out my interviews with the cast, talking about this episode! Madeline Brewer (Janine) https://youtu.be/MdSbERK6cFM Amanda Brugel (Rita) https://youtu.be/3SbU-WQoOEU Previous Season 4 Interviews Nina Kiri (Alma) https://youtu.be/MgItxXT9BkY Max Minghella (Nick) https://youtu.be/M-eS-7PevtA Sam Jaeger (Mark Tuello) https://youtu.be/lxGlkCQ411o

SraPerla Rose: Usually when they show so much of a supporting character it means they’re dead 🤔

G Swole: Keep up the good work!

Joanne L: The thing about Rita is that she is probably the only person with genuine faith in the whole show. She's forgiving, compassionate, humble. Serena is now asking her to perjure herself on oath, which of course Rita wouldn't do, and Serena should have realised that.

Abigail Altabef: Please address you not realizing that those crisis pregnancy centers are real. They will do ultrasounds and lie about what they see. They will tell women they’re farther along than they are and say they missed the window for a termination. It’s a huge issue in America.

Meera B: Totally agree on the 10! I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode.

kisslena: I’m excited that you loved this episode. I felt the SAME WAY- the first watch was great- second even better. The writing and directing is exceptional. That argument inside the milk tank is epic. Janine held June accountable. For it all.

James C: Those 'crisis pregnancy centers' exist today, and they are every bit as shady as portrayed. John Oliver did a segment on them on Last Week Tonight.

green bird: Early in 1989 I found out I was pregnant (I was supposed to be infertile - BIG surprise). I knew I wanted to keep my son, but I needed help figuring out how to survive as a single mother (bio-dad disappeared). These "pregnancy counseling centers" advertised in the phone book as being unbiased places to go for whatever help you need, but after going to 3 of them I found a regular counselor to go to. These centers will tell you anything to get you to come in & watch their horror videos, while they scare & shame you into doing what they think is right. As soon as they found out I wasn't thinking of abortion, they ignored me. They don't offer ANY help to women (& the resulting children) who decide against abortion.

luckybear57: Things I noticed that I have to let slide for plot progression but were almost not believable: #1 They seem to find the train station pretty quickly #2 They miraculously found the train that was actually going to Chicago. #3 The door to the milk container just happened to be open. #4 The container was filled with something as harmless as milk and not something toxic #5 June finds the release valve relatively easily considering you can't really see thru milk #6 They seem to be very strong women to be able to have climbed out of that container on their own. #7 Even though the train was taken over it ended up where they were trying to go. And then throughout the whole episode I was having this thought... They are going to smell SO rancid once they get out of there and start to dry 🤣😂

ravenpotter: janine might be my favorite character in any show ever, i literally squeal audibly whenever she says one of her adorable lines. but she isn't just one-sided, she's also so complex which i love. she's overcome so much and she's incredibly strong and she has weaknesses. god i just adore her. i want her to be with charlotte and june to be with hannah in the end, that's all i want 🥺

donHooligan: wow. that ending. some women just don't mind being used for sex...no big deal to them. ...while others are actually severely psychologically injured by being treated in that manner. perhaps we should be more open and honest as a culture. let the cheaters cheat and let the the polyamorous do their thing. just stop lying. it hurts innocent people. which is to say no place like Gilead (or America for that matter) should exist in the year 2021.

Ann Hall: Those clinics exist now... just so you know.

Elaine Toribio: I loved the Janine and Rita storylines, they were amazing, really beautifully done. The milk tanker story was just too nonsensical to me. Why are they sending fresh milk to the war front? Who jumps into a tanker without knowing what’s inside when there were two empty Jeep’s on the train that they could have hidden in. How the heck did June find the release valve so quickly? And how did no one notice the leaking milk. I can appreciate the symbolism of the milk but i just couldn’t get past the lack of logic in that plot line. Thank you for your HT reviews. I love them.

Mary Mshikow: I loved the episode. Hope they incorporate how the other religions tried to fight the sons of jacob. I see how catholic tried to help by forging passports.

Jessie 007: Crisis Pregnancy Centers have existed for decades.

Dawn I: Janine is THE BOSS in this episode damn

A_Gullible_Girl: I’m team June all the way. People forget that she has been thru just as much horrible stuff as everyone else. What do people expect from her? Of course she doesn’t have a plan. She’s just trying to survive.

Alisha B: this was my favourite episode ever too

Afia K: Those pregnancy crisis things are actually real! we have those now and not to mention the people outside of planned parenthood who harass you, and scream crazy things at you!

A S: Loved your break down of this episode! I also thought it was a great episode. I thought that they showed us beautifuly how June loses her ''super power'' as we go deeper into the real world that is outside of Gilead - Both Janine and June are masters of surviving, but their strategies are quite opposite - Janine is becoming childlike, pleasing her abusers and docile in a way while June rebels hardcore, full of deadly hate, And we get to see how June's strategy no longer works for her nor saves her, her ''hardness'' and ''kill mode'' is shown now as a hurdle while Janine's flexibility might be a very sad but better way of trading and surviving in this new war-zone like reality. I think that June sees that very clearly too at the end of this episode, she can sense her power is running low while Janine might save them, June is shocked by this I think, She was a leader for too long to remember what it's like to be the weak one now, and she is the weaker one now while janine places and adjusts herself much better. Fascinating way to show us their psyche and different mental states in this episode!

Julie F: Great review, thanks! Earned you a new subscriber!

M. Worthy: 🥛 'MILK', Season 4, Episode So is the title a double entendre in regard to Jane and Janine being stowaways (up to their necks in milk🥛) in route to Chicago, where Janine inevitably sucks leche🍼 out of some guy? MILK 🥛🤔

Ndestructible: Nice touch with the eyepatch Steve 😄

Silvia Etna: My favorite episode so far this season. The cinematography was awesome. I love Jeanine and Rita so much, the milk incredible. It must have symbolized motherhood. Motherhood is such a central theme of this show

Anew Daya: I wonder if nichole is really Nick’s baby 🤔 or Fred’s 👀👀

Ravuun: Anti--abortion clinics like the one in this episode have existed for decades in real life, unfortunately.

Em: In the meantime in Poland there's a complete ban on abortion. Even on damaged fetuses which can damage women's health. I am living Gilead

Isidro Medina: In 3x12 June tells Rita that Serena is only nice when she’s up to something.

Rachel Smith: Others may be on edge about Sarenas behavior, but W that are POC are not surprised by her behavior. Seems on brand for white women to me

Cat Mitchell: I’m sorry, I thought the mushroom line was so dumb though...

Meg Delany: Wouldn't Nick be assigned another wife by now? Maybe that's yet to be revealed?

Jolanta Liana: has anyone else caught that Janine said to the doctor in the second flashback that the condom fell off. Has anyone seen the I May Destroy You recently? The condom didn't fall off, now, did it? She was sexually assaulted.

Kathryn Cain Madsen: I love what you said about the photography. Hey, those clinics that you see as the lead up to Gilead exist NOW and have for decades. Also, I thought Janine looked a little crazy town at the very end.

Toisan Craigg: I kept thinking throughout the show that Janine and June must smell like sour milk. LOL Just me? Okay. Good episode. I wanted to hit someone at that ending. I agree the little things meant a lot. Did you notice Janine changed from her red handmaid's cloak into a red sweater, and the next scene was her coming from doing what she thought she had to do with the rebel dirtbag? "I guess you're used to this" ran through my head. Glad Rita got revenge in her own way, even with her dealing with Stockholm syndrome. What a show. I guess Rita's revenge is the little bit of happiness we're going to get.

Elizabeth Samuels: Rita's son died in the war, but as you said Steve it doesn't say which side he fought on. she discloses that she once had a , Matthew, who was killed in the war after the Commanders launched their coup against America."

Tine Leg: A 10 is absolutely deserved. This ep is a literary and cinematic masterpiece, master class, perfectly executed gift to the world. I would love to discuss THT with you. I might be your literary counterpoint to your cinematic expertise. I’d love to go toe-to-toe with you! In the best way ever of course.

Dona Harrell: Time to rewatch.

9000ck: Rita is most definitely a Nissan Ultima kind of lady.

Deirdre Morris: My thoughts: every room seemed closed in like a coffin or grave. Except Rita's...her kitchen eating the sushi was bright, with high windows and ceilings. She was doing something she wanted to do. Before when she met with guy and the paperwork, her room looked small and dark. But then she decided how she Wanted to handle the Waterfords

MardiGras Snowballs: Serena is the architect of the oppressive Gilead regime and is worse than the commander because as a woman and really should know better. Serena has absolutely no redeeming qualities and I hope that they take that child away from her so she can experience firsthand the devastating grief that she visited upon the Handmaids!

A K: Yes, haven't seen you since 2019!

shiloh goes: Amanda is so beautiful

Lisa: I just want to point something out. This beginning of the Gilead belief system, is actually just reality. There ARE clinics that advertise "family planning." And you get there and they lay all of that on you. That's not a dystopian future scenario. That's NOW. Women go through that NOW if they wind up at one if those "clinics." And it isn't dramaticized at all. That is 100% legitimately what they say. They show you pictures, disgusting pictures. Just. Like. That.

Maria Donegan: Best episode of the season

Bella Maz: Good analysis. The only thing I would point out is that the scene of the pregnancy crisis center isn’t something that is a transitional, in-between circumstance between the USA and Gilead— those types of centers exist today as a sneaky anti abortion strategy. I love how this show ties into toxic conservatism that actually, presently occurs now. Edit: actually also the mandatory “warnings” that the good doctor told Janine are actually required by law in certain conservative states today.

Kevin Williams: @stevevarley there was also Rita’s visual transformation. When she was with Moria, Serena, and Mark. Her hair was in a ponytail. Then with Fred and the end scene her hair was completely down. Showing her adjusting to life in Canada 🇨🇦.

Emily Hogan: Was anyone else scared that Rita was going to get killed while eating the sushi? Like it may be her "last meal" or something. I held my breath the whole time.

Conker King: Jumped the shark a little for me.... June is being irrational.

Elizabeth Samuels: Sadly this happens in a lot of marriages and relationships. Women have sex with the men and they get whatever they need out of it. It's like oh god, just go ahead already and don't forget I need that diamond necklace. Or maybe it's just once a week or so, or so and they get it over with and move on with their happier things to do...

MelanieKai Gregory: Did anyone else think that the counselor may have been OfMathew?

Jeanette Ortiz: The eye patch! lol

Elita Ndenya: Is the baby Janine wanted to abort Caleb?

Grace Bendell: is anyone talking about the fact that Nick might not be the further of Junes baby... if Fred can have kids then there no way to know who is the father, something I have thought about since season 2 tbh

Kathy Knight: Those fake crisis pregnancy centres aren't futuristic. They exist now. They have existed for decades in fact.

Sirendipity Britt: Great video! You’re great! I subscribed! 🤗

Rosa Isela: Can we just agree that this season is coming in like fire!!! I cant wait to see what they have in store for us!

Aatikah Carmen happy: Definitely the best episode I loved seeing Janies background

David Lincoln: Happy to have the Handmaid's Tale back and of course your reviews. I have chosen to ignore the bad reviews and just watch the show....

Nurse Topher: Omg I am obsessed with this show.

Tiisetso Thabana: Janine was awesome 🤩 I really felt June choosing her daughter over everyone isn’t fair. No life is more important than another.

chakir assmaa: Why june said that she can t stay here is not safe place even if the guy not touched her ???

Luisa Green: Hated when the others didn't make it

Suzette Figgs: That was a mike drop for sure. I'll pray for your son. That left Waterford dumbfounded.

Donna Howard: Rita did the deed giving the commander the pregnancy test

Lili: It’s so sad when Janine comes back with the brad like she just did something casual . I think its suppose to mean June can’t protect her or anyone , and it makes me fear that Janines gonna die soon

Divine Lioness: This episode reminded everyone why we love Janine! She took one for the team and handled it with grace

Siara Ramirez: Been watching you reviews for a while now. I really appreciate your take on each episode. I always re watch the episode after a review and find myself appreciating the genius even more after watching it after you review. Brings it to life a little bit more. Like the lighting subtleties for example, and also you general opinion on things. Your videos feel like I’m talking with a friend about this show, which no one I know watches it, so long story short, I subscribed! And your interviews you have done off Bruce and Alma’s character, so well done. I hope you keep growing this channel. You put your heart into it and it shows!!

MassielE: The final scene had me sobbing, Just the thought of Janine being so numb that she just went with it to proof herself useful and June’s face realizing just that... my heart broke for them

Suki B: I subscribed for this handmaid cosplay

Meow Holly Meow: I would have absolutely given that dude a handy or bj to feed/save my life and my Comrades life to fight another day. It’s nothing worse than what you’ve already been through in the last month. She’s been abused and harmed but going out in that street unarmed and hungry? They would end up raped and killed, it’s just lesser of two evils here. June failed Janine so many times.

Meow Holly Meow: Not sure if you know this, but those clinics exist NOW, today!!! They trick women into thinking they’ll get abortion or even adoption info and then guilt them and shame them into keeping the baby. Google “abortion clinic” in your area and check the listings, at least one will be one of these clinics (they hide pretty well though with words like “we counsel on all options” but don’t provide a lick of medical or financial aid to these struggling prego women.

Lily Mack: IMO, Janine had sex with the creep because, unlike June, she''s adjusted to her Gilead sex role & is no longer tortured by it. It's how she can help. The role of leader & follower have reversed. Her penchant for being positive isn't because she's naive: it's because, despite it all, she chooses to put her energy into being positive.

Britni Alexander: That crisis pregnancy center wasn’t speculative. Those are real and it’s been going on for decades. They really masquerade as abortion clinics to guilt trip the women who show up. It’s not just for the show.

Zachary Goulet: I think it's important to mention that those "crisis clinics" like the one Janine went to exist in America now and they're completely legal. They use fear tactics and lie to women and seeing them in this show only shows that we aren't as far off from Gilead as we would like to believe.

Eve B: Those "fertility centers" already exist...

Maureen Dowd: Loved Janine and Rita in this episode !! They both called out someone for some crap. Both were usually so quiet and sweet, and watching them become bold was wonderful !!

Velma Queen: I just wanna say. Gilead would’ve never hurt a child. I call bs. They were just messing with June’s head.

Eric Salazar: I get the feeling these crisis fertility clinics are not Handmaids Gilead lore. I'm pretty sure they're real and a thing in the US.

Missy Lee: It says a lot about how effed up society is when he perceived the fake abortion clinic as a pre-gilead thing, when it's actually a current real thing.

Pisces R'us: Jeanine took one for the team this episode😩

lofibean: I want to add that these Crisis Pregnancy Centers are not just in early Gilead, they exist right now in our world. There's a great documentary called 12th & Delaware that follows a for-profit abortion clinic situated across the street from a Roman-Catholic Church supported pregnancy clinic. Often times these pregnancy centers will have "abortion" somewhere in their title or description so that women will find them when googling abortion clinics. They're also right across the street and have similar sounding names, so some women will confuse the two and go to the wrong place where they are ridiculed, fear mongered and shamed out of getting an abortion. I even read one woman's account, she said that if they know you have an appointment at the abortion clinic, they will stall conversation to keep you there as long as possible to make you miss your appointment.

Leslie A.: Great analysis :) But I would like to highlight that the "Crisis Pregnancy Centers" we saw in the episode do exist in the US today and do the same kind of things. Sadly, back in 2018 US Supreme Court supported how they lie to women. So yeah the eeriness of that scene was all too real. Ruling: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/26/supreme-court-crisis-pregnancy-centers-673183 John Oliver's expose on what these centers do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NNpkv3Us1I

SM_T: There are actually real life crises centers today. They've been around for years, there was a whole Law and Order SVU episode about it.

Thomas Pham: Let Serena have her baby and then take it away like how she has done to June!

Lindy: Thanks for the great analysis of the episodes, and all the interviews with the cast. Love this show so much and can't wait to see where it is heading.

Esha B: Y’all help me out I still get confused... So Gilead is only in Boston and D.C?? Canada is a safe place and where else... because they’re in Chicago and I thought all of that was Gilead.

Marisa Collette: Those kind of crisis pregnancy centers are around right now. They fool women into coming in and tell them lies about abortion just like this episode. Always try to go to your doctor or even a planned parenthood for correct information on choices. They don’t pressure you either way, just tell factual information.

Patricia Kirk: When women are used so much by men and it just becomes an everyday event where you place your mind somewhere else. :(((( Janine reminds me of me in my 1st marriage where you just before the act and that's it your mind is somewhere else !!! while a pig does what they want on your playground equipment .Janine knew this she had been used so many times an abused.she knew that it was just an act for food and this was a pig!!!! And she needed to help june and herself have food and clothing that's how women are they would do whatever it takes to survive. June needed help to survive so Janine service the pig!!! :((((((

Patricia Kirk: All women have been to those clinics you're a guy you don't understand where they tried to miss Lead women. when you know you can't take care of that child Trying to convince you to keeping it or adopting it !!! it's my body I'll do with it what I want ........ no one will tell me what I want to do. Janine knew what she wanted to do She went to the right clinic afterwards .men they have no clue There should never be a question of Janine's mission.

Patricia Kirk: I don't understand why everyone would blame June for the deaths of the handmaid's or anyone else there a War With Gilead all are going to be dead and new handmaids will take their places !!! June is only fighting for her children and her freedom and the children's freedom she saved 82 children it is A-war of the fittest surviver .and all of the Martha's and all of the handmaids are victims and yes there will be death trying to fight for your freedom quit blaming June She is just doing whatever it takes to make sure Hannah is safe she cannot say that everyone she's done a pretty good dam job of saving the people she has saved but it's like Jesus when he came to Jerusalem he tried his best to help people and tell them about the Kingdom of heaven but they constantly kept falling backwards constantly needed reassurance Even when God was on the mountain and the people were in the desert they deserted God and worship idols and the devil people are weak and I don't remember who helped them so much when they get scared they forget all the good that Jesus did for them just as well as these people forget the good that June as done when they've done nothing they don't even think on their own and when June is so strong in her belief to excape they follow her but when she doesn't have every answer for them they want to blame her WTF !!! people that are fighting for their freedom no one person can fight this war There are going to be casualties in any kind of war when it involves human slavery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dawn aire: June reminded me of Lydia in this episode. At the end she seemed upset to discard her handmaid's garb. It's like it's her only identity now. June realizes like Lydia, she has failed Janine and the handmaids at the end of the episode. Great episode.

TIFFANY PRIORE: What drives me nuts it that June won’t go to Canada and reunite with her husband and Moira, and baby too. And then go fight, but find your damn husband!

Nikki T: So happy I found this channel. Love your reviews and interviews.

mandy sobeski: Serena is awful Idk how anyone could like her she's worse than Fred.

Syrexis: Crisis pregnancy centers aren't totally a beginning of Gilead thing. They do exist and they do lie to women constantly. It's disgusting.

John C: Steve, can I be your Commander? 😉

Meghan Brennan: The crisis pregnancy centers are real right now. So glad they are shining light on how messed up it is

S. L.: Every season gets worse and worse. S1 was beautiful because of the little victories, the hope, the inward focus on June's thoughts. Now it's just an action show. Which I'm sad about because I want so bad to continue to love this show. But I don't 😢

Z S: I hope Janine and June are actually able to find Mayday in Chicago. Also, I hope that we learn more about Rita's backstory! She's such a boss
