Patrick Azzarella: Lomg post to help with any confusion about Mikasa's sudden tattoo. In 2013 WiT studio in season 1 episode 6 had Mikasa's Asian mom pass down an embroidery style to symbolize their family and that she should pass it too her children. Around this time the manga exploded and people realized in the manga her Mom gave her a tattoo on her wrist with the Shogun symbol. In 2015 during the Uprising Arc(s3) the manga volume cover also showed her bandaged arm hiding the tattoo, so we knew it was gonna be relevant at some point. And then 31 months ago chapter 107 came out and the Tattoo was now important. And with the s3 promo art again removing the tattoo bandage people assumed they were just gonna have Mikasa show the embroidery when s4 came around but it seems Mappa just went with the original tattoo anyway even if that messes up the continuity of the series.

WAGA: So Mikasa's tattoo was first mentioned all the way back in Ch 5 of the manga...but in the anime WIT only kept the mention of a family insignia and removed the tattoo part in EP 6 where we get mikasa's backstory...check the episode again, mikasa's mom mentions an important "embroidery" that's passed down in the family...and in the final season is where we finally come to know more about her origins.
