Gian Da Silva Borges: Jesus did not come to abolish the law, he came to fulfill it. But what law is he talking about? God gave Moses the ten commandments and another hundred precepts that make up the law of God. You find them mostly in the first five books of the Bible. People were supposed to keep all the commandments, but some soon realize that it would not be possible. Even if you do not kill, steal, or commit adultery, there is a commandment that says, "Thou shalt not covet" (Ex 20:17; Rom 7: 7). Why, greed happens in the mind, in the heart, even before you take action. And that's what Jesus is talking about here. The law said "Thou shalt not kill" (Ex 20:13), but Jesus says that it is enough to be angry with someone for it to count as murder. The law said "You shall not commit adultery" (Ex 20:14), but Jesus says that it is enough to lust after a woman for you to be guilty of adultery. Well, if you for those who read the Sermon on the Mount and find it all beautiful, you probably don't understand what it says. You are reading your death warrant. Or will it mean that you never feel angry at anyone, never tampered with your thoughts or lied, trying to look like you're not... So everyone's lost? Exactly this is what the apostle Paul explains in his Letter to the Romans. God gave the law as a shut up, a way to show that everyone is a sinner, everyone is a transgressor, everyone guilty defendants awaiting punishment. But there is a problem there. The penalty for sin is death. No lawyer can get you out of this, but Jesus can. Follow my reasoning. In the Old Testament, when an Israelite transgressed the law, when he sinned, it was necessary to sacrifice an innocent animal, a lamb for example, in his place. Detail: the lamb needs to be flawless. Jesus, being sinless, was the only one able to obey the law, the only one who had no impure thoughts like we do. Though human, he did not inherit the sin nature that we inherited from Adam. Why do you think Jesus was called the "Lamb of God" (John 1:29) by John the Baptist? Exactly. Because he came to be sacrificed in no sinful place, to fulfill the law. When you see a thief being tried and convicted, you say the law was fulfilled. The reasoning is the same. Remember Adam? For it is, by the disobedience of one, many become sinners. God wanted to go the other way around. By the obedience of one, Jesus, and by his death, many can be saved (Rom. 5:19). Believing in Jesus as your Substitute is the only condition for your being saved. Or do you think you'll get there complying with a law? Impossible. In the eyes of God you are an adulterer, a thief and a liar. And since you must hate me for saying this, add murderer to the list. But if you really recognize yourself as a sinner who depends on God's grace to be saved, after hearing me make fun of you, you'll probably say, "Gian, you don't even know half of who I really am." "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Because God did not send his Son to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved by Him. For whoever believes in Him will be saved, but whoever does not believe is already condemned; because he did not believe in the name of the only-begotten Son. John 3:16,18
