During the Great Titan Wars from 100 years ago, the Eldians used their Titan powers to persecute the other races of humans on the planet, Marleyans included. King Reiss eventually renounced the violence his ancestors caused and decided to allow Marley to have revenge on Eldia. Although, he asked the Marleyans if he could live a brief Paradise on the island before they could kill him (which is why the island is called Paradi). Eventually, when the Marleyans came to kill the King, they realized that the memories of the Eldians living on the island had been wiped and they were remaking their past mistakes. You eventually start to understand that this war is simply a vicious cycle. No one is to blame, everyone is just a slave to their history. If you recall the battle between the scouts and the Beast Titan in season 3 part 2, Zeke says "these poor Eldians are doomed to repeat their mistakes, all because King Reiss stole their memories from them"
